ILP #2

The Digitech event held at the Turnbull conference center was buzzing with tables from several of the colleges from Florida State University among them the Scientific Computing, School of Entrepreneurship, Communication Science and Disorders, and the College of Communication and Information to name a few. The school that caught my attention most was the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy with regard to their certification in unmanned aircraft systems. This program is part of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Program. It involves the use of drones and their extensive uses during emergency management needs to respond and assess recovery and mitigation during crises situations where it may be physically impossible to access the area. Below are picture of three of the drones which range in price from $1,000 to $15,000 as well a picture of the operating console which hones in with thermogenic infrared technology. While there were other exhibits this new use of technology with drones I found to be fascinating.

Data collection surveys are very useful when wanting to know about information about a specific subject or area. By using a survey one can develop questions that specifically address what important information is to be gathered from the answers to the questions provided in the survey. As a teacher research is always important to better understand progress and areas that may require improvement. For example, a survey for parents of a 1st grade elementary class that is learning to read and improving their reading skills as to their speed and understanding of concepts regarding the materials they are reading is important as it involves the parents and their perception of the child’s progress with reading both at home and in the classroom. As a teacher I would use this information to ensure that the reading lesson plan and curriculum is unique to each student’s needs so that they are able to reach their target reading level in order to move on to the next grade level.

Blogging as a class was fun because you can see how topics of interest vary among students taking the same class. Blogs about current news were always interesting because it kept me updated with current events. Some blogs were funny, one that stood out was about toilets talking. The tweets with humor were always the best as a good laugh in your day was always welcomed. I am not much of a blogger but I intend on working on my blogging skills.

The next technology related skill that I would like to learn next would be mastering Microsoft Office and all of its applications in a very proficient manner. I intend to take and introduction to computers class that will break up word, excel, power point and outlook and provide an intensified learning approach. I would also like to learn more about the Cloud and its features. Becoming as knowledgeable as I can to improve my technological skills to be the best teacher I can be for my students.

The “Flipped Classroom” is an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning that reverses the traditional educational arrangement by delivering instructional content, online and outside of the classroom. The model is a mixture of direct instruction and constructivism, that makes it easier for students who may have missed class to keep up because they can watch the videos at any time. For students to be successful on their own, videos used in the flipped-classroom model must include a variety of approaches in the same way a face-to-face lesson would, and they must also have good sound and image quality so that students can follow along easily. These videos must also match the curriculum, standards and the labs or activities the students will complete in class. As mentioned in our book in Chapter 10, social networking has become part of the learning strategy helping to build bridges to parents and the communities in order for them to keep up with what is going on in the classroom. Linking students to their world helps create a global learning community that enhances the learning environment in a way that helps students build confidence by developing interactive skills with their peers. This is the link that I found with information on the flipped classroom: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/flipped-classroom-pro-and-con-mary-beth-hertz. Check it out is has many videos and expanded content on the subject of the flipped classroom.
Education in it of itself would be almost impossible to carry out without resources. As limited as resources may have been in the very first school classroom. This is not the case today as resources are plentiful and available to conduct effective teaching in the classroom. The concern is which is the best resource to use and how to make the decision to choose resources carefully. The open terms mentioned in the podcast relate to such resources and that they are available to anyone and everyone that intends to use these resources for educational purposes. The reuse in teaching, learning and research are interrelated and serve a great purpose to continue education at all levels from elementary to the university level. Universities in particular through their libraries offer extensive resources for students as part of their tuition. This enables students to prepare research papers and use resources and obtain materials they can use to enhance their education. A paragraph on new skills you acquired from working on the two PowerPoint assignments.   Reflect what you like/don’t like about each and how you can improve it next time.
Preparing a lesson plan by using a power point format can be a challenging task as you must abbreviate content on slides in order to make them attractive and catch the attention of your audience and then introduce speech about the content on the slides. Animations were a little bit of dislike for me, maybe for the complexity of the produce; over all was a learning experience.

Powerpoint is a very useful tool for presenting a lesson plan to students and providing a combination of learning formats in one single presentation. Before you can understand a concept you must be able to remember or recall the concept. This is possible through power point because it provides a visual learning format, audio format and interactive format. Also, power point allows for the organization of slides to separate facts, rules, concepts and ideas in order to understand and apply the different components of the concept being taught in the classroom. In order to then analyze all of the information being presented in the power point presentation there must be an organized flow of information that breaks down the concept for students to analyze and then evaluate its meaning, thus equipping students with all the necessary elements to create with all of the information that has been presented to them.
